FRENCH ACTRESS'S DEATH BELIEVED TO BE SUICIDE

Capucine, the French movie actress whose leading roles included one with Peter Sellers in "The Pink Panther," died after falling from a window. Police said she committed suicide. She was 57.

The actress, born Germaine Lefebvre, died Saturday after plunging from her eighth-floor attic apartment and police inspector Claude Zbinden said an investigation left no doubt that she committed suicide.

The Lausanne newspaper Le Matin said she shared the apartment with three cats. It quoted an unidentified friend as saying that she had been suffering from depression.

A former model, the Toulon-born Capucine came to the United States in the late 1950s and studied drama under Gregory Ratoff. She later continued her screen career in Europe, settling in Lausanne in 1961.

In addition to "The Pink Panther" which came out in 1964, her films included "Song Without End" and "Walk on the Wild Side," in 1962, "What's New Pussycat" in 1965, "Fellini Satyricon" in 1969 and "Martin Eden" in 1979.

Among more recent roles was one in the French TV film, "Quartier Negre," based on a novel by Georges Simenon.
