FURTHER OIL SPILLS PREDICTED BY SOCIETY

Millions of gallons of oil will be spilled on land and water year after year unless the United States changes its approach to oil, the Wilderness Society says in a report called "100 Spills, 1,000 Excuses."

The report released Monday details the 100 worst spills since the Exxon Valdez accident broke all records when the tanker ran aground March 24, 1989, dumping 11 million gallons of crude oil into Prince William Sound, Alaska.

"The sad fact is that while the past 12 months have featured a number of large and widely publicized spills, this has been, in most respects, a typical year," said George Frampton, president of the society.
