SMITHFIELD GIVEN TIME TO MEET VA. STANDARDS

Smithfield Foods Inc. says it is glad to have more time to meet the state's new wastewater standards but the meatpacker has not withdrawn its threat to move to North Carolina to escape Virginia's pollution laws.

The state Water Control Board agreed Monday to give the hog processing operation until October to study various technologies and costs of complying with the state's standard for phosphorus discharges.

Although Smithfield is building an addition to one of its two Isle of Wight County slaughterhouses, the company has threatened to move its 3,000-employee operation to North Carolina because of Virginia's pollution regulations.
