WINTER TRYING TO HANG ON INTO SPRING

Spring was to start at 4:19 p.m. today, so the snow that fell Monday night was in season.

Seasonal or unseasonal, the wet snow - coming after days of warm weather - melted quickly today.

There was not that much of it to melt. The National Weather Service said there was .12 of an inch of precipitation Monday and .08 of an inch early today.

It was a little worse in Floyd County, which got hit with about 2 inches; roads were slick and all the schools were closed.

"The highway department was out all night," said Marti Baird, a dispatcher with the Floyd sheriff's office.

The snow, the weather service said, was hardly a record-breaking event.

For example, there was a 5-inch fall last April.

But winter may intrude on spring tonight. The weather service said temperatures, under fair skies, will be in the upper 20s.

Wednesday will be sunny with highs in the 50s.

There may be some rain in the mountains Thursday and Saturday, but the forecast is largely for partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 50s to 60. Lows will be in the 30s to near 40.
