N.C. STATE TRUSTEES TO MEET TODAY/ BASKETBALL TEAM'S PROBLEMS TOPIC

Acting Chancellor Larry Monteith said his unfinished review of North Carolina State's basketball program would provide the basis for his remarks at today's emergency meeting of the school's trustees.

"The part I'll be discussing is related to academic factors associated with men's basketball players and therefore it's not something I can discuss publicly," he said.

Monteith declined to say whether the presentation would include a recommendation about whether men's basketball coach Jim Valvano should be retained.

"I don't think that I really want to discuss the issue at this point. I think this is premature for me to say anything until I've met with the board of trustees."

Since February, Monteith has been reviewing State's program, focusing on academic issues during the past 25 years. Most recently, former player Charles Shackleford acknowledged that he had accepted money while at N.C. State, violating NCAA rules. The State Bureau of Investigation is probing allegations of point-shaving by N.C. State players.

A source told the North Carolina News Network that Valvano was not invited to the meeting and did not plan to attend.

NCSU trustee Troy Doby of Raleigh said he didn't expect the board to be presented with a recommendation today, but hoped the matter would be resolved soon.

"Jim Valvano is our basketball coach," Doby said. "We like him as our basketball coach, and all this other stuff - it's got to be causing him a lot of heartache."

On Friday, the board of directors of the Wolfpack Club, NCSU's booster organization, met to discuss Valvano's future.

No vote was taken and opinions varied, but K.M. "Charlie" Bryant, the booster club's executive director, emphatically denied that the group had taken a position - either formally or informally - on whether full payment should be made of the $500,000 required by a buyout clause in the coach's contract.

"The Wolfpack Club did in no way take a position nor did the Wolfpack Club encourage anyone to take a position," he said Monday night. "The Wolfpack Club does not get involved in university affairs. We are not and will not get involved. We did have a board meeting, but we did not dicussion any position."
