But people spread their peanut butter on more than bread.
"I like to eat my peanut butter with avocados, sliced red onions and a little lettuce," said Velma G. Voss, who is a member of the Adult Peanut Butter Lovers Fan Club, a national organization claiming 50,000 members. "It's really very good."
Voss' creation may sound unusual, but there are many other ways to fix a peanut-butter sandwich.
People eat the spread with bacon, mix it with onions and mayonnaise, put it alongside crushed potato chips or cover it with sour and sweet pickles.
Some add butter or margarine. Others select honey.
A few have tried peanut butter with bananas and salad dressing. Cream cheese or sliced cheeses, like American, also seem to be popular mixed with the nutty stuff.
Fruits and vegetables - such as raspberries, sliced oranges, shredded carrots, cucumbers and chopped celery - are also gaining ground.
And could anyone forget chocolate chips?
The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. - Los Angeles Times
