$3 MILLION ALLOCATED FOR INDOOR PLUMBING

The Virginia Housing Development Authority allocated $3 million Tuesday to help build bathrooms, install drain fields and septic tanks, and to obtain adequate water supplies for low-income Virginians.

More than 200,000 Virginians don't have bathrooms in their homes.

The money will be combined with $2 million already set aside by the state to improve the state's plumbing deficiencies over the next two years.

Up to $8,500 will be spent on each house to improve plumbing, state officials have estimated. About $5,000 will go toward building a bathroom, about $1,500 for installing a drain field and septic tank, and about $2,000 to provide safe drinking water.
