BABY GIRL BORN IN WRECKED CAR ON ICY HIGHWAY

A woman gave birth Tuesday in the back seat of a car that slid on the snow and ice on U.S. 340 in Augusta County and struck a tree.

Brenda Duff, 20, gave birth to a daughter shortly after Paul Patton, Jason Fitzgerald and Troy Southern of the Waynesboro First Aid Crew arrived on the scene of the 1:35 a.m. accident.

"I've delivered babies before, but this is the first one I've delivered in the back seat of a wrecked car, in a blizzard," Patton said. "The most pressing part of it was getting the baby into the ambulance quickly."

Duff was not injured, but her father-in-law, Charles Duff, the driver of the car, suffered a broken nose and her mother-in-law, Patricia Duff, had a broken arm and a broken leg.

Brenda Duff and her newborn daughter were both listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday at Waynesboro Community Hospital.
