ROANOKE COUNTY MAN BADLY BURNED IN GASOLINE CAN FIRE

A Roanoke County sports car enthusiast was burned Tuesday night when vapors from a can of gasoline caught fire.

Fire Marshal Kenneth R. Sharp said Richard McNeill was apparently siphoning gas in a Porsche sports car when the fire started.

McNeill of the 5000 block of Meadow Creek Drive Southwest shed a burning shirt and watch as he ran from the attached garage into his home to get help.

His wife called Emergency 911 and he was transported to Lewis-Gale Hospital, where he was listed in satisfactory condition after being treated for a small area of third-degree burns.

Sharp said McNeill was burned on the upper right arm and left hand.

A shirt with a hole burned in its sleeve was lying on the floor of the garage. The watch was found several feet away.

A burned gas can with a siphoning pump melted in two was sitting beside the sports car.
