The Roanoke Area All-American Soap Box Derby Race will be July 7. The event is part of the Virginia State Games. Winners of the kit car division and the masters division will compete in the All American Soap Box Derby Championships in Akron, Ohio, Aug. 6-11.
Each contestant in the Roanoke Derby will take part in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Virginia State Games, and will be eligible for prizes.
Boys and girls ages 9-16 may compete. Racers in the Kit Car Division for ages 9-16 are conventional sit-up designs. The Masters Division, designed for ages 12-16, is a lay-back car for those who want to work with aerodynamics and design. The Dual Control Division is a doublewide car designed for a handicapped driver and a co-driver.
New this year is an expanded rally racing program, which allows participants to race their cars more than once a year. By earning points in the rallies, contestants have more than one chance to earn a spot in the Akron race.
Other races include the National Derby Rally, the Keystone Rally, and the National Derby Challenge. The Roanoke Derby board is looking at a site in Roanoke County as a possible permanent home for the Derby so a track could be built by July 7.
