ACCIDENTALLY RELEASED PRISONER IS RECAPTURED

A Washington man wanted in connection with a murder in Maryland has been apprehended after authorities mistakenly released him last week from an Alexandria jail, officials said.

John Robert Ashby, 18, was apprehended Tuesday night in Washington as a result of a cooperative effort by police in the district and Alexandria, Alexandria Sheriff James Dunning said.

Ashby was mistakenly released from the Alexandria Detention Center last Tuesday when jail officials either confused his name or his file with another prisoner with the last name of Ashley, who was scheduled to be released.

Ashby was being held on a cocaine possession charge at the detention center. But Prince George's County police had informed Alexandria officials that Ashby was being sought on homicide charges. Ashby had been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a shooting that occurred outside a Prince George's County shopping mall last October.
