Roy Acuff will be away from the Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville, Tenn., for two to three weeks because of minor eye surgery, a spokeswoman said.

Acuff, 86, had outpatient surgery Monday on his right eye to prevent his glaucoma from getting worse, said Opry spokeswoman Debbie Logue. She said the singer would wear an eye patch for a while.

Acuff, dubbed the King of Country Music, has performed at the Opry since 1938.

Katarina Witt, the East German ice skating star, said burglars broke into her country home and made off with "valuable jewelry," the state-run ADN news agency reported Wednesday.

Police are investigating the break-in, which occurred last week at Witt's bungalow in Eberswalde County, northeast of Berlin, ADN said. It gave no further details.

Witt, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, enjoyed great privileges under East Germany's former hard-line communist leadership, as did other top sports figures. She currently performs in a commercial Western ice revue.

James Michener said he may defect from Random House.

The prolific novelist, who has had more than 30 books published by Random House, issued a statement saying he may leave for "some small house obedient to the old traditions."

Michener, author of "Hawaii" and many other best sellers, said he had been "devastated by the series of hammer blows my company has suffered in recent months."

The writer cited the forced resignation of Robert Bernstein as Random House president; Bernstein's replacement with Alberto Vitale, whom Michener described as "not a man reared in the traditions of American publishing"; and the forced resignation of Andre Schiffrin as managing director of Pantheon Books, a Random House subsidiary.

Michener also expressed concern about possible layoffs at Random House.
