IVANHOE - Herman Otto Pope, age 77, died Thursday in the Wythe County
Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Samuel
Alexander and Minnie Lee Lawson Pope. He was a prominent Wythe County farmer
and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He was educated in the Wythe
County Public Schools and attended Roanoke College and VPI. He is survived by
his wife, Madge Heldreth Pope; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra Lee and
Dr. Thomas M. Johnson, Smithfield, N.C.; Patricia Ann and John Phillippi,
Wytheville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Herman Alexander and Barbara Simpson
Pope, Houston, Texas; James Brown Pope, Max Meadows; one sister, Audrey Sunday
Pope, Wytheville; nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday
at 12:00 noon at St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Laurie McAlpine
officiating. Interment will be in the West End Cemetery. The family will
receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday or
at the residence in Ivanhoe, at any time. The family suggests that those who
prefer may make memorials to the St. John's Episcopal Church or to the Lead
Mines Rescue Squad. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, is in charge of
arrangements.
