EPA ALLOCATES $1 MILLION FOR VIRGINIA

Virginia is one of four states chosen to receive an extra $250,000 in federal antipollution funds, bringing the state's total allocation to more than $1 million, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced.

The money is intended to help reduce polluted runoff in waters throughout the state, not just the Chesapeake Bay region.

The EPA said Wednesday it has granted more than $777,000 to Virginia to manage "non-point source pollution," or runoff from farmland, logging operations, developed land, mines and other non-specific sources.

The EPA also has reserved an additional $250,000 for Virginia's program. Virginia will have to submit a grant application for the additional money, which it must match with state funds.
