WILDER ASKED TO ALTER STANCE ON STATEHOOD

Mayor Marion Barry on Thursday asked Gov. Douglas Wilder to change his mind about statehood for the District of Columbia, asserting that the city's finances are in order.

"Unlike many cities and states, and unlike the federal government, the district's fiscal house is in order," Barry wrote Virginia's chief executive. "Please look at the results we achieve, not just the controversy surrounding the difficult budgetary decisions we make in order to achieve our outstanding fiscal record."

Wilder told a National Press Club audience Tuesday that he has "some concerns" about the district's fiscal status. He said he would oppose statehood until the D.C. government "showed that it has its fiscal house in order."
