MORE MONEY NEEDED TO HELP MENTALLY ILL

The state will have to consider merging mental institutions and finding new sources of money to meet the needs of mentally disabled Virginians in the 1990s, the state's mental health commissioner said Thursday.

King E. Davis, commissioner of mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse services, said growing demand for services will come as costs for Medicaid, personnel and operations are increasing.

He said the type of mentally ill and retarded people helped by the state will change, too.

They will tend to be younger, come in later for help and get less family support than other mentally disabled people, he said.
