DOMINION BEGINNING EXPANSION

Dominion Bankshares Corp. began construction Thursday on a $5.5 million expansion of its Western Virginia Operations Center on Plantation Road.

The 160,000-square-foot addition represents a 53 percent expansion of the facility. It will be joined to the existing four-story portion of the center on the side facing ITT.

Dominion said it is adding space to meet current needs and growth over the next five years.

The company moved 100 mortgage loan processing jobs to Roanoke from Northern Virginia last year.

Almost half of Dominion's 1,915 employees in the Roanoke Valley work at the operations center.

The expansion, which will include a technical training center with state-of-the art facilities, is the fifth since the facility opened in 1969. The last addition was made in 1985.

Chairman Warner Dalhouse said 1990 will be an exciting year for Dominion, with the addition and the Dominion Tower downtown both under construction.

Contractors for the addition are Breakell Inc., Lowe and Nelson Plumbing and Heating Co. and Engleby Electric Co. Target date for completion is June 1991. - Staff report
