SCHOLARSHIP SET UP IN DEPUTY'S NAME

A scholarship in memory of Barry Pendrey has been established by Virginia Western Community College and the Roanoke Sheriff's Department.

Pendrey, a deputy sheriff and paramedic, was beaten to death with an oxygen tank by an inmate in the infirmary of the Roanoke City Jail in 1985.

The college will use approximately $2,000 donated by the Sheriff's Department and private sources to establish an endowment fund in Pendrey's name, according to Mark Emick, coordinator of the development program at Virginia Western.

Emick said the school will take the interest from the endowment to provide a full-tuition scholarship annually for a freshman or sophomore majoring in criminal justice, fire science, emergency medical technology or other human services field.
