EASTERN, PILOTS AGREE TO 25% SALARY CUT

Eastern Airlines and its pilots union have agreed to an interim contract that calls for a 25 percent wage cut but does not call for rehiring pilots who went on strike, the company said Thursday.

And the carrier insisted it needs twice that amount in concessions by the time the contract expires on July 1 to emerge successfully from Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

The cuts apply to about 850 Eastern pilots still working at the prestrike average of $72,000 a year. A 25 percent cut would bring the average down to $54,000. But it excludes about 950 replacement pilots hired at an average $27,500 when the strike began in March 1989. - Associated Press
