The Hechinger Co., a Landover, Md., chain of do-it-yourself home centers, reported 1989 earnings of $34.2 million, down from $48.8 million, attributed in part to remodeling 67 stores and closing a Charlotte, N.C., distribution center. Sales last year increased 21 percent to $1.23 billion.

\ The Meridian Bank of Philadelphia, holder of a $1.3-million note for the Arborgate Inn at Salem, was the only bidder at a foreclosure sale for the 76-room motel last week. The bank is looking for a buyer that is in business, according to Robert Sayre, a bank lawyer.

The number of passengers riding Greyhound buses through Roanoke has increased from an average of 22 to 28 since the drivers' strike began almost three weeks ago, according to Bob Harman, company district manager in Roanoke.
