The Hechinger Co., a Landover, Md., chain of do-it-yourself home centers, reported 1989 earnings of $34.2 million, down from $48.8 million, attributed in part to remodeling 67 stores and closing a Charlotte, N.C., distribution center. Sales last year increased 21 percent to $1.23 billion.

\ VF Corp. of Wyomissing, Pa., parent of Bassett-Walker Inc. of Henry County, said it will close two plants in Georgia and Alabama to bring its production capacity more in line with projected demand.

\ The Meridian Bank of Philadelphia, holder of a $1.3-million note for the Arborgate Inn at Salem, was the only bidder at a foreclosure sale for the 76-room motel last week. The motel is in business and the bank is looking for a buyer, according to Robert Sayre, a bank lawyer.

\ The number of passengers riding Greyhound buses through Roanoke has increased from an average of 22 to 28 since the drivers' strike began almost three weeks ago, according to Bob Harman, company district manager in Roanoke.

\ Georgia-Pacific Corp., reorganizing after its acquisition of Great Northern Nekoosa Corp., said the Big Island mill of Great Northern will be in its containerboard and packaging group. Tom Weiss of Great Northern said last week he does not expect a significant change in jobs at the plant level.
