STUDENT FACES LSD CHARGE

A Franklin County High School student caught with 16 doses of LSD during a four-day biology field trip last November has been charged with felony drug possession.

The student, who was not named because he is a minor, will be tried in Franklin County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Authorities have not released a court date.

LSD, a hallucinogenic drug, was discovered on a Nov. 5-8 marine biology trip to Virginia's Eastern Shore after one of the teachers became suspicious of some of the students' behavior.

When it returned to Rocky Mount, the group was met by officers with the Franklin County Sheriff's Department and Rocky Mount Police Department.

A search turned up 16 doses of LSD in the possession of one of the students, authorities said. The student was charged with possession of LSD with intent to distribute.

Authorities said charges will not be filed against other students, even though several admitting taking LSD during the field trip.

Franklin County school officials could not be reached for comment late Friday.
