ACID SPILLED IN CLEANUP AT AVTEX PLANT

About 200 gallons of sulfuric acid spilled onto the ground at the former Avtex Fibers plant during a cleanup being coordinated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The spill was cleaned up within hours and posed no threat to the environment, said Donald C. Derner, Warren County's emergency services coordinator

The acid was being transported by tractor-trailer Thursday from the plant's acid reclaim area to wastewater treatment lagoons, where the recycled acid is used to treat water, Derner said.

He said the truck jackknifed as the driver was backing up. The driver was unable to right the truck before it tipped over because a pin holding a wheel broke, causing the trailer to tip over.
