TECH STUDENT WINS MISS MONTGOMERY PAGEANT HONORS

A Virginia Tech sophomore was named Miss Montgomery County 1990 at the Miss Montgomery County Pageant Saturday night at Christiansburg High School.

Virginia Vanessa Trost, 19, of Forest will represent Montgomery County at the Miss Virginia Pageant July 12-14 in Roanoke.

A graduate of E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Trost is majoring in chemical engineering at Virginia Tech, where she is also chairwoman of the university's Residence Hall Federation and active in cheerleading, track and gymnastics.

She performed "The Toccata" by Aram Khachaturian on piano for the talent portion of Saturday's contest and was given the best talent award.

Talent counted for 40 percent of each contestant's final score, personal interview represented 30 percent, and swimsuit and evening gown counted for another 15 percent each.

The first runner-up for Miss Montgomery was Shelly Mabe, 19, a sophomore at James Madison University, who was also voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants. The second-up was Blair Gibson Bennett, 19, a freshman at Virginia Tech.

Other contestants included Kimberly J. Fain, Lesley Ann Gallimore, Christine Sheese, Rolayne A. Pannell.

The pageant was hosted by Monica Shuman, former co-anchor of WSLS-TV Channel 10 news.
