REBEL LEADER ARRESTED AFTER CLASH WITH SOLDIERS

The leader of a 3 1/2-year-old armed insurrection in this South American country was arrested after a shootout with soldiers in which two of his security guards were killed, the military said.

Ronny Brunswijk, leader of the Jungle Commando guerrilla group, was arrested Monday on drug charges and was being held at an army post in the capital of Paramaribo, military spokesman Borger Breeveld said on state television.

Breeveld said the charges were related to Brunswijk's announcement Sunday that his men had seized more than a ton of unrefined cocaine from four Colombians forced by bad weather to land their plane near one of his bases.
