BUSHES GET BROCCOLI

America's most famous broccoli shipment was welcomed at the White House Monday by Barbara Bush, her dog, Millie, and reporters who milled around the stalks looking for news.

As Bush tried and failed to keep a straight face, George Dunlop, head of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association, waxed metaphorical.

The broccoli, which is being donated to a food bank, is "a green beam of light" emanating from one of the president's thousand points of light, he said.

"Millie and I thank you for the broccoli. We'll eat it," Barbara Bush said. But as for her husband, "If his own blessed mother can't make him eat broccoli, I give up."

All this began when Bush told stewards on Air Force One that he never wanted to see broccoli on his plate again. Last week, he declared, "I'm president of the United States, and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli."
