RADIATION TECHNICIANS STRIKE AT NUCLEAR PLANTS

A strike by itinerant radiation technicians Monday was effective at two nuclear reactors in Florida and one in Georgia, but its success at 34 other plants was not clear.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is seeking recognition as the bargaining agent for about 3,000 technicians who are employed by eight contractors, and who travel from reactor to reactor to work when they are shut for refueling and maintenance.

The union said the workers were striking around the nation, but would not say how many actually stayed away from the job.

At one of the largest contractors, the Institute for Resource Management Inc., in Annapolis, Md., Donald W. Darnes, senior vice president, said, "The overwhelming majority did report on time at almost all the plants across the country."
