AUTOPSY REVELAS INMATE CHOKED

Preliminary results of an autopsy on an inmate in the Roanoke County Jail who died early Sunday indicate the man choked while eating food, a medical examiner said Monday.

Dr. David Oxley, deputy chief medical examiner for Western Virginia, said that a final cause of death on Kevin Wayne Davis, 27, of 2605 Leemount St., Salem, will not be known until results of some lab tests come back in a few days.

Davis was discovered having breathing problems about 2:15 a.m. Sunday.

"[Davis] was having labored breathing and the guard indicated he had vomited," said Sgt. Roger Robinson.

Davis was being held at the jail on a series of breaking-and-entering, grand larceny and assault-and-battery convictions and was awaiting sentencing April 20 in Salem Circuit Court.
