Sheriff Louis Barber told the Board of Supervisors Monday night that he had collected about half of the $90,000 in outstanding levies he had been given.
About $30,000 of that was uncollectable because property owners could not be found or were in bankruptcy, Barber said.
Posted computer lists of delinquent taxpayers also seem to be working. The lists are at the county treasurer's office, the county library branches and other locations, and Treasurer Ellis Meredith said people are starting to come by and tell him they want to pay up.
Meredith said a part-time employee hired specifically to work on delinquent taxes had helped to collect $163,106. This total includes the roughly $45,000 collected by the sheriff plus other levies, civil warrants and garnishments.
Barber said a sheriff's sale will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the impound lot on Pepper Street, behind Hardee's.
Stereo and computer equipment and furniture seized to settle debts will be sold.

The board changed two voting sites.
Residents of the B2 precinct in Christiansburg will now vote at the Church of the Brethren on Franklin Street instead of at the county courthouse.
Those in C2, east of Christiansburg, will vote at Good Shepherd Baptist Church instead of at the Church of Christ.
The changes were made because of Electoral Board concerns about available space and parking.
