CALLAHAN APPLIES CHAUVINISTIC STANDARD TO UVA

I AM WRITING concerning the remarks made by Del. Vince Callahan of McLean regarding the appointment of Patricia Kluge to the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia.

At the age of 19 (more than 20 years ago), Ms. Kluge posed for a British men's magazine. Granted, that probably wasn't the wisest decision that one could make; but I'm sure we all can think of incidents during our teen-age years that would not be considered "proper."

As for his remarks considering her "talents," how would he know what they are? What gives him the right or authority to judge her and determine what position her abilities might suit her for? If the University of Virginia was concerned about her past, one would certainly think that they would not even have considered her for the Board of Visitors.

I am infuriated that anyone, much less a member of the House of Delegates, would be so chauvinistic and petty as to present a 16-page speech concerning the Kluge appointment when there are so many other issues involving the commonwealth. Issues such as the homeless, the economy, environmental protection, women's rights (you can see where he stands on this issue), education, the elderly; the list could go on and on.

I hate to think that my tax money is paying for his emotional outbursts when he should be speaking on the concerns of the citizens of Virginia. It is time we stop putting so much emphasis on the little issues and concentrate on the major ones while there is still a Virginia to be concerned about.
