MODESTO COUNCIL OKS CRUISING BAN

The city that inspired the film "American Graffiti" moved to shed its reputation as the Cruising Capital with a pair of ordinances trying to put the brakes on the pastime.

The City Council unanimously approved the two rules Tuesday night after listening to testimony that ran nearly 3-1 against the proposals.

Teen-agers, most of whom were born after the release of the 1973 film directed by George Lucas, a Modesto native, said they cruise popular McHenry Avenue in this central California city for the same reasons as their parents: to show off their cars and meet dates.

"I'm 17 years old and I've waited all my life to cruise," said Billy Moorehead. "You can't get rid of us. We're going to stay."
