BLACK ARTS CONFERENCE AT RADFORD

Radford University will sponsor a Black Arts in America Conference today through Sunday, with eight writers, critics and speakers scheduled to lead activities focusing on contributions to the arts by black Americans.

Author Maya Angelou, this year's Distinguished Visiting Professor at Radford University, will be the keynote speaker at a dinner Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Muse banquet room.

Other participants include Vertamae Grosvenor, a writer and commentator on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered"; Daryl Dance, a folklorist; Woodie King Jr., an actor and director; Houston A. Baker, a critic and writer; James Haskins, an author; and Pinkie Gordon Lane, a poet and writer.

Novelist Paule Marshall also will read from her works on Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. in the Heth Student Center. Marshall's reading will include excerpts from "Daughters," a novel published by G.P. Putnam's Sons earlier this year; "Brown Girl, Brownstones," a television drama; "Reena and Other Stories," a collection of early fiction; and "Soul Clap Hands and Sing," a novella.

The conference is sponsored by Radford University with a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy and support from CSX Corp.

Admission to all events is free. For more information, call the English department at 831-5460.
