THE TIPOFF

FOR THE FAMILY: The Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts will have Family Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event includes free admission for families to all museum exhibits and activities, including a noontime sing-along by folksinger Curley Ennis.

Among the other offerings is "The West Explored: the Gerald Peters Collection of Western American Art," which includes works by Frederic Remington and John James Audubon.

The museum is in Roanoke's Center in the Square.\ THE YOUNG AT PLAY: "My Emperor's New Clothes" is this year's production from the Junior League of Roanoke Valley and Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, and this is the weekend of its run.

It debuts today at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. and continues Saturday and Sunday at Mill Mountain in Center in the Square. Tickets are $2 for adults and $1 for children. For show times and ticket information, see the Calendar on Page 10 or call 342-5740.\ VIBRANT TROUPE: The Miami City Ballet will perform next Friday, April 6, at 8 p.m. in Preston Auditorium at Radford University.

The classical troupe, founded in 1986, is directed by Edward Villella, who is a protege of George Balanchine.

The program will include three works choreographed by Balanchine: "Valse Fantaisie 1953" by Mikhail Glinka, "Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux" and "Allegro Brilliante" by P.O. Tchaikovsky, plus two other pieces.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children. For reservations, call 831-5420.\ HOLISTIC SURGEON: Bernard Siegel, the doctor who wrote the bestselling book, "Love, Medicine and Miracles," will speak Wednesday night at 8 in Preston Auditorium at Radford University.

Siegel, a surgeon, is founder and director of the Exceptional Cancer Patient Support Program, which encourages people to think themselves well while choosing the medical treatment they feel comfortable with.

He is president of the American Holistic Medical Association. Admission to his talk is $2.\ SLIPPIN' AND A'SLIDIN': Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom on Ice will fill the Roanoke Civic Center with families Wednesday through next Sunday, April 8. Seven shows will be presented, and tickets are $8 and $10.50, except for Wednesday night, when WDBJ Family Night knocks $2.50 off.\ MAHLER AND BRAHMS: The dynamic duo will be featured in Monday's Roanoke Symphony concert at 8 p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium.

Diana Walker, soprano, will sing in Mahler's Symphony No. 4 in G Major. Brahms' Symphony No. 4, Opus 98 also is on the bill.\ MOUNTAIN TALE: "Munci Meg," Lime Kiln Theater's original adaptation of a mountain folk tale, will come to the Grandin Theater in Roanoke Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday nights at 7:30.

It's a colorful tale featuring big, colorful, papier-mache puppets.

Tickets are $4, except for children under age 10 and senior citizens, who pay $3. The tickets will be available at the door and are on sale at Books Strings and Things in Roanoke. Or you can make reservations by calling the Lime Kiln in Lexington at 463-3074.\ NO DAY AT THE BEACH: David O. Brown, a Cousteau Society photographer and naturalist, will speak Tuesday night at 8 on "Threats to the Global Ocean."

This will be at 8 o'clock in Smith Auditorium of Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg.

Brown has been involved in deep sea studies from the Gulf of Maine to the West Indies. His talk will cover marine mammals who have experienced the effects of pollution, habitat loss and overfishing.
