GRANDPARENTS DO NOT GET QUAKE BABY

In a case involving a 10-month-old boy orphaned by the October earthquake in San Francisco, a judge Thursday rejected custody claims by two rival grandparents and awarded temporary custody of the baby to cousins.

The teen-age parents of James Henry "Jimmy" Brown IV were both killed in the earthquake. Lawyers have noted the boy's guardian may oversee several million dollars that could be awarded in a potential lawsuit against California, which built the two-tier section of the freeway on which the parents died.

The paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother each said the other was unfit for custody and interested only in the baby's potential future fortune, as well as $100,000 he already has been awarded.
