IF SHE LIKED 'EM, SHE PICKED 'EM

Brenda Dilley said a lot of her picks in the "Guess The Oscars" contest sponsored by the Roanoke Times & World-News were just that - guesses.

But she had no doubt about a couple of her choices.

When she saw Jessica Tandy's performance as a cantankerous Jewish widow in "Driving Miss Daisy," "I knew she would get it," Dilley said. "The best actress and the best movie. I just loved it."

Dilley, a Blue Ridge housewife, is one of four contest entrants who correctly picked seven of eight major Oscar winners. She was named the contest winner after a drawing.

Entrants were asked to mark their choices for winners in eight categories: Best picture, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best director, original screenplay and best original song.

The other contest entrants with seven correct selections are: Nancy Wilkerson and Lisa Schmitt of Roanoke and Roy Butler of Salem.

The way Dilley came up with her choices was simple. "I picked the ones that I liked. I just thought they'd win and they did." Her one incorrect guess was in the original screenplay category - she chose Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing" to win.

Dilley will receive a year's worth of free movies at Roanoke's Grandin Theatre, Radford Theater in Radford and R/C New River Mall Movies in Christiansburg.

Is she excited about the prospect of going to all those movies for free? "Oh, yes. I don't mind buying the popcorn," she said with a laugh.

Dilley goes to movies "every time I get a chance to. I'm planning to go this weekend," she said.

"I want to go see `Ernest Goes To Jail.' I'm dying to see that one."
