BATTER UP AND PASS THE MUSTARD; BASEBALL IS ON THE AIR THIS WEEK

Live baseball coverage begins this week as New River radio stations bring play-by-play action to the airwaves.

WVRU of Radford University starts live broadcasts on Tuesday when the home team takes on Virginia Commonwealth University at 2:50 p.m. Wes Durham calls the action and comments.

On April 7, WKEX starts broadcasting Virginia Tech baseball. Listen for details.

\ RACES: WPSK's new production, "Fast Lane," on Friday and Monday at 6:45 and 8:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m., offers the latest qualifying news from the Busch Grand National and Winston Cup series on Friday and race results and track news from Sunday races on Monday.

WRAD and WRIQ will begin broadcasting Pulaski County Speedway races on April 7. Both stations will offer a daily race report at 5:50 p.m. and a live question/answer call-in show starting on April 9.

WJJJ airs the Country Home 200 at Darlington Speedway at 12:45 p.m. today. Tomorrow at 12:45 p.m. it's the Transouth 500 from Darlington.

\ LIVE: WPUV is helping to promote Appalachian Awareness Week activities this week at New River Community College. The Original Dillards and the Smith Sisters are in concert tonight at 8 at Pulaski County High School's Little Theatre. Admission is $10.

WBLB goes live today noon-5 p.m. for the Pulaski County Chess Club Chessathon, a fund raiser to send the county and state champions to the national tournament. Call the station at 980-3411 for more info.

WPSK is live noon-3 p.m. at Pulaski Motors for the Big Tent Sale. There's free Pepsi and popcorn and chances to win WPSK T-shirts, tickets to the George Jones and Conway Twitty concert, and newly released movie videos.

WPUV's "Banded Hub Hoedown" 1-3 p.m. today features Mac and Jenny Traynham and the Dixie Gray Band. Local groups and artists can call 980-1580 to be on the show.

WVVV will be at the Balcony in Blacksburg tonight, 7-9, for another of its "Rock 105/Coca-Cola Brings Home the Entertainment" parties where you can register to win a complete home entertainment system. The group Push will also be there.

WVVV's "End of the World Party," is April 7 at Sackett's, 8-11 p.m., where registration for the entertainment system also is available.

WJJJ's "Lawn & Garden Extravaganza" is April 7, 10-6 p.m., at Cambria and Franklin streets in Christiansburg. Businesses can get involved by calling 382-4993.

\ NEWS: WFNR will open its 100.7 FM station in about a month.

WVRU's "Talk of the Town," Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Friday at 1:30 p.m., will discuss the philosophy and religion department at Radford University.

WKEX's "Focus on the Family," weekdays at 9 a.m. and 6:05 p.m., features "Day of Prayer" on Monday and Tuesday, and "Children of Rape" Wednesday through Friday.

\ ROCK: WVVV and WJJJ's "Flashback" today, 9-11 a.m., is "Love Affair with the Automobile."

Sunday on WVVV: "Reeling in the Years," 9 a.m.-noon, offers Joanie Mitchell, Roger Daltrey and more. A new solid hour of blues is 8-9 p.m. "In The Studio" at 9 p.m. features Volume I of the Traveling Wilburys. "Live Show" premieres at 10 and the "Album Feature" at 11 is the Rolling Stones' "Some Girls."

On Tuesday, WVVV's "Rest of the Record" features cuts from Robert Plant's "Maniac Nirvana." Friday highlights the Doors on WVVV's "Five at Five."
