Hyman said UTC originally had contacted him about the job, but said he had not been offered the position. Hyman said he is comfortable at VMI.
"I look forward to going to work in the morning," Hyman said, mentioning VMI's athletic staff. "They're good people. This really sort of jumps out at you. We've got something special here. It's a good situation. We may not have everything everyone else has, but we pitch in and try to help."
In a release issued by VMI, Hyman said he had gone through "much soul searching and analysis" regarding his involvement with UTC's search and had talked at length with VMI Superintendent Maj. Gen. John W. Knapp about the role of athletics at VMI.
"I am philosophically comfortable with VMI's position on intercollegiate athletics," Hyman said, " . . . and I am even more positive of the direction and the manner in which [Knapp] will lead the school."
Hyman, 39, has been the Keydets' AD for six years. He came to VMI from Furman, where he was associate athletic director. - Staff report
