COST OF FIGHT TOO HIGH, SO STATE GOP PAYS IRS FINE

The Virginia Republican Party has paid a $76,000 fine to the Internal Revenue Service for failure to pay withholding taxes, GOP executive director Joe Elton said.

"We did fight for a while, but then we were advised of the cost of the fight," Elton said Monday.

Late last year, state GOP chairman Donald W. Huffman announced that a former bookkeeper had not paid withholding taxes for 20 months. The GOP had to borrow money to pay the penalty and the $125,000 in back taxes. The bookkeeper was fired.
