G-P'S JOB CHOICE: MOVE OR LOSE 'EM

Georgia-Pacific Corp., which promised during its long takeover battle with Great Northern Nekoosa Corp. to keep layoffs to a minimum, told between 100 and 150 Wisconsin workers Tuesday that many of them may have to choose between going South or going on unemployment.

One Wall Street securities analyst estimated that fewer than 20 people would be laid off outright.

Georgia-Pacific, which now owns 97 percent of Great Northern's stock, said it was setting up a new division in Atlanta that will combine related Great Northern operations in Port Edwards, Wis., with those of Georgia-Pacific. A Great Northern research facility and Great Northern's corporate data center will remain in Port Edwards.

James G. Crump Jr., chief operating officer for Nekoosa who will head the new division, said the relocation would result in some job losses due to duplication.

"As quickly as possible we will begin to tell people exactly what their status is - whether they are being offered employment in Atlanta, whether they can expect to continue in their present position, or whether their job will be eliminated," Crump said.
