EARTH DAY FAIR CALLED GREENWASH

The exhibits stretched more than a block in two large white tents on the National Mall as corporate America put its best environmental face on display Wednesday.

But some environmentalists weren't impressed and members of Greenpeace were escorted from one of the tents after several handcuffed themselves to a support pole near the Du Pont Chemical Co. exhibit. The U.S. Park Police said 19 Greenpeace members were arrested and charged with demonstrating without a permit.

The organizers of "Earth Tech" said more than 100 companies brought exhibits to the five-day environmental technology fair marking Earth Day, April 22. The exhibit and a series of technology forums, designed to attract members of Congress and other government officials, were estimated to cost about $1 million, with participating companies paying most of the bill.

Participants included Fortune 500 companies such as Du Pont and AT&T but also some unknowns such as Oil Stop Inc., which says it has invented a new type of boom to capture oil spills.

But Greenpeace USA executive director Peter Bahouth said it meant only that "Corporate America has begun a campaign to paint themselves green." A nearby banner read, "Don't Be Fooled - Industry Greenwash."
