VA. GETS FIRST LISTING IN FORTUNE'S TOP 10

Eleven Virginia corporations made the 1989 Fortune 500 rankings, down by two from 13 in 1988. But this year the state will claim its first-ever top 10 member - Mobil Corp.

Richmond-based Reynolds Metals, ranked 75th, was the top-ranked Virginia company in the Fortune list, released Tuesday. The only other state company to make the top 100 was James River Corp., also based in Richmond, at 81st.

Reynolds, with $6.2 billion in sales, was up from 80th in 1988. James River, with $5.9 billion in sales, was up from 92nd.

Mobil was ranked 6th by Fortune with almost $51 billion in sales. The New York-based oil industry giant is moving to Fairfax County this summer.
