TECHNOLOGY STOCKS A BOOST FOR MUTUALS

After years of weak performance, mutual funds that invest in technology stocks bounced back and were the best performers in the first quarter.

The break in the Japanese stock market hurt funds invested in the Pacific region, making these the worst performers in the period.

Overall, the zigzagging stock market in the United States hurt the typical investor in the first three months, according to the most recent quarterly reports by Lipper Analytical Services. The average stock mutual fund fell 2.31 percent, compared with a 3.01 percent decline in Standard & Poor's 500 stock index.

Many portfolio managers had set aside larger-than-average amounts of their assets in Treasury bills, so they managed to outpace the broader market, said A. Michael Lipper, president of the firm.
