PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY SUING U.S. GOVERNMENT

The Prince William County Board of Supervisors has voted to sue the federal government for several million dollars it claims the county lost when Congress authorized the taking of a 542-acre tract.

Robert Cole, county board chairman, said Tuesday that Hazel-Peterson Cos. had agreed to give the county cash and road improvements in exchange for rezoning the William Center property in 1986.

Opposition emerged in 1987 when the company announced plans to build a regional mall on the tract, which is adjacent to the Manassas National Battlefield Park.

Congress authorized the legislative taking of the property to prevent construction of the mall and made the tract part of the battlefield.
