`TREASURE ISLAND' OPENS BARTER SEASON

Barter Theatre has lined up nine of its 10 scheduled plays for the 1990 season, starting with an adaptation of Robert Lewis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" April 17 through May 12.

"Treasure Island" will play to student matinees during the week, and the general public on weekends. Barter's regular all-week public performances will start May 30 with Neil Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs," an autobiographical play running through June 23.

Arthur Miller's drama, "All My Sons," will run June 27 to July 21; "Pump Boys and Dinettes," a country musical, July 25 to Aug. 18; Frederick Knott's suspense-thriller, "Wait Until Dark," Aug. 22 to Sept. 15, and Larry Shue's comedy, "The Foreigner," Sept. 19 to Oct. 13.

The final play at the main theater will run from Oct. 17 to Nov. 10. Plays being considered include "Peg O' My Heart," "Quilters," "The Cocktail Hour" and "Hay Fever."

At the Barter Playhouse, across the street from the main theater, "This and That" - a variety of entertainments - will run from June 6 through July 14, and "Good Evening" - cabaret set pieces by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore - from July 18 through Aug. 25.

The Barter Youth Stage will present two children's plays this summer at the Playhouse, and offer theater workshops for youngsters between the ages of 8 and 18.

"After 58 seasons, we are still challenged by the process of developing our annual schedule," said Rex Partington, artistic director and producer. Schedules and information on discount plans are available by telephoning 628-3991 locally or toll-free elsewhere 1-800-572-2081.
