BASKETBALL PLAYERS HONORED

Regular-season champion Northside and playoff winner Cave Spring each have placed three players on the 10-member All-Roanoke Valley junior-high squad, selected by the five league coaches.

Northside, under Coach Tracy Poff, placed Kelly Dampeer, Jim Porter and Walt Derey on the team. Cave Spring, coached by Chris Carr, had Steve Kagey, Robbie Hibbs and Scott Fayed on the team.

Franklin County had two players selected - Nicky Coleman and Derek Bryant. The other members are Hidden Valley's Jason Tuggle and Pulaski's Montie Brown.

All of the all-stars are ninth-graders.

Northside enjoyed an 8-0 district record and a 16-0 overall mark. Cave Spring finished 6-2 and 9-3, Franklin 3-5 and 5-10, Hidden Valley 3-5 and 4-12 and Pulaski 0-8 and 1-13.

But in the playoffs, Northside was upset 50-38 by Hidden Valley in the first round. Cave Spring knocked off Franklin 76-63. Cave Spring then defeated Hidden Valley 39-33 for the championship.

Porter was the district's leading scorer with a 21.8 mark. Coleman averaged 18.4, Dampeer 17.7, Tuggle 16.1, Derey 15.6, Brown 15.5, Kagey 13.2, Bryant 10.7, Hibbs 10.6 and Fayed 8.2.

Porter, Derey and Brown each averaged 11.1 rebounds per game. Dampeer leads in assists with 8.6. Fayed averaged 6.2.

Dampeer and Tuggle also made the all-district team in football.
