Reynolds Metals, ranked 75th, was the top-ranked Virginia company in the Fortune 500. The only other state company to make the top 100 was James River Corp., at 81st.

Other Virginia companies on the list were:

Gannett Co., Arlington, ranked 130th.

Universal Corp., Richmond, ranked 155th.

Ethyl Corp., Richmond, ranked 162nd.

Lafarge Corp., Reston, ranked 261st.

Chesapeake Corp., Richmond, ranked 384th.

Smithfield Foods, Smithfield, ranked 395th.

Tredegar Industries, Richmond, ranked 445th.

Media General, Richmond, ranked 464th.

Mobil, meantime, was ranked 6th by Fortune with almost $51 billion in sales. The oil industry giant is moving to Fairfax County.
