BOARD WON'T HEAR COACH

Jim Valvano lost a chance Thursday to defend himself before North Carolina State University trustees and Valvano prepared to negotiate a buyout of his contract as the school's basketball coach.

" . . . We are disappointed that one who has served the university for such a long period of time is being forced out without an opportunity to be heard," said Woody Webb, Valvano's attorney.

Webb had asked the school's lawyers to let the coach address the N.C. State Board of Trustees and bring a financial proposal with him. But Chief Deputy Attorney General Andy Vanore, a school negotiator, said the meeting would not be held, Webb said.

"We are assuming that each member of the board of trustees has been apprised of Coach Valvano's repeated requests to meet personally with the board, and we find it most unfortunate that they have rejected these requests," Webb said.

Webb said he would deliver a firm proposal for a financial settlement by 9 a.m. today. The proposal "will contain a monetary settlement which is at this time undetermined," he said.

Webb has said the proposal would more than split the difference between N.C. State's initial $106,500 buyout offer and the $500,000 payoff clause in Valvano's contract.

"We would hope that it would be resolved in the next few days, which obviously precludes a lawsuit," said Palmer Sugg, an associate of Webb. "A lawsuit only benefits the lawyers. It's been a long, convoluted process."
