LITTLES REMAINS HORNETS' COACH

Gene Littles, who took over as interim coach of the Charlotte Hornets in January, took the job on a permanent basis Thursday when he was given a multiyear contract by owner George Shinn.

"The franchise had its best month in history [in March] in terms of wins and losses," Shinn said at a news conference. "Gene has a good rapport with the players and they like him very much, as evidenced by the performance of our team."

The Hornets are 8-25 under Littles, who took over the NBA team when Dick Harter was fired Jan. 31. They won six games in March, including three on the road.

Last week, Shinn gave Littles the option of either remaining the head coach or going back to his former role as director of player personnel. Littles opted to stay on the bench.
