Forty-seven of the miners volunteered to go to South Carolina and help with the cleanup in the wake of Hurricane Hugo. As a result they've been picked to receive a 1990 President's Volunteer Action Award.
The 47 "points of light" will be honored by President Bush at a White House luncheon ceremony April 27 in observance of National Volunteer Week. Eighteen other people, organizations, corporations or labor unions also will be honored.
The 47 union members were picked from 150 who volunteered to go to South Carolina. Among those who made the trip were electricians, carpenters, loggers, brick and block masons, cooks, emergency medical technicians and laborers.
The union provided supplies for the volunteers and for people living in McClellanville, S.C., where the volunteers were sent.
During the week of work, volunteers cleared streets and lawns and electrical crews went door to door checking and repairing residential electrical services. A construction crew helped reconstruct the local school.
The volunteers also helped clear streets in the village of Copehee at the request of the National Guard.
