The School Board appointed Chairwoman Kathryn Wickline and board member James Franklin to serve on a joint committee with representatives from the Board of Supervisors.
Ridgeway District Supervisor Francis Zehr suggested the evaluation after a two-month debate over the possible closing of Samuel Hairston Elementary School
Superintendent Virgil Poore said Thursday that the study, due to be completed in October, will have little impact on the decision to close the school. The study will be paid for by the supervisors and will look at saving money by consolidating four elementary schools. Whether Samuel Hairston remains open or closes in June will depend on the school budget, which is pending.
According to Poore, the School Board was instructed by the Board of Supervisors last week to shave $148,000 off its $37 million spending plan for 1990-91. Poore said elimination of road work will meet the budget reduction requested by the supervisors. But, if any further reductions are necessary, Samuel Hairston Elementary will be closed, for a saving of about $149,000.
